Why your waist grows even when your weight barely changes
You eat as before, yet your jeans won't do up. The scales show almost the same number, but your belly looks different. Many women in the transition know this. And it is not "weak willpower" — the body has its own logic here.
What is happening
When oestrogen falls, the body responds less well to sugar, and fat starts to be stored not on the hips but around the waist — in the transition, about 6% more each year. Hence three things that seem separate but are really one chain:
- sugar cravings and energy slumps after meals;
- "fog" after lunch;
- a growing waist at the same weight.
A slump after eating and sugar cravings are the body's reaction to a rise and fall in blood sugar, not a matter of character.
Measure your waist, not your weight
In the transition, weight may barely change while fat around the waist grows. So the scales tell you little. The most reliable home guide is a waist smaller than half your height: for example, at a height of 166 cm — under 83 cm. A waist of around 88 cm is a signal to pay attention (for an Asian build — around 80 cm). This is a guide, not a verdict.
What has the biggest effect
Lack of sleep. Even an hour or two of lost sleep noticeably worsens how the body handles sugar — especially in women in menopause. Sleep is a metabolic lever, not just rest.
Too little muscle work. Muscle is the main "consumer" of sugar. The less of it there is, the harder it is for the body.
Sugar spikes after meals. They can be noticeably smoothed out — by the order of food and by movement.
What to do
Vegetables and protein before carbohydrates. Start a meal with vegetables and protein, and have bread, grains or sweets afterwards. This smooths the sugar spike by about a third.
A walk after meals. 10–15 minutes straight after eating is a separate route by which muscles take up sugar. It works together with the order of food.
Strength training. The main lever in menopause: muscle takes up sugar and keeps itself from wasting away with age.
Protein at every meal, and fibre. Protein keeps you full and maintains muscle; fibre from vegetables, pulses and whole grains smooths blood sugar.
An early dinner. In the evening blood sugar stays higher, so the main meal is better earlier. But strict fasting does women in the transition no good.
Less refined sugar, fewer sweet drinks and less alcohol.
About the liver
A frequent silent companion of a growing waist is fat in the liver. It usually causes no symptoms, and standard liver tests may be normal. No "cleanses" or "detoxes" are needed — the same steps work: waist, whole foods, strength training, less sugar and alcohol. A doctor can assess the risk.
What about weight-loss supplements?
"Weight-loss" supplements have no evidence behind them, and blends with green tea extract can harm the liver. What works is protein at every meal and fibre from food.
When to see a doctor
Severe thirst, frequent urination, sudden unexplained weight loss, episodes of feeling faint — these are reasons to see a doctor and get your blood sugar checked.
What to try this week
- Start meals with vegetables and protein, carbohydrates afterwards.
- 10–15 minutes of walking after your main meals.
- One strength session this week — or better, two.
