Vegetables and protein before carbs: the same lunch, gentler on blood sugar
This step isn't about eating less or giving up foods you love. It's about order: what to eat first. A simple rearrangement on the plate noticeably changes how the body handles food.
Why it works
If you start a meal with vegetables and protein and eat the bread, grains, potatoes or pasta afterwards, the rise in blood sugar after the meal is gentler. A smaller rise means a smaller dip afterwards: less sleepiness after lunch and fewer sweet cravings.
After 40 the body responds less well to sugar, especially as the belly grows, so simple techniques like this are especially useful. And together with a walk after meals the effects add up.
How to do it
- Vegetables first — salad, cooked or raw vegetables.
- Then protein — meat, fish, eggs, tofu, legumes.
- Carbs — at the end: the side dish, bread.
Everything on one plate, just in this order. You don't need to eat less.
Who should be more careful
- If you have had difficulties with food — an eating disorder now or in the past — rules about food are better discussed with a specialist than introduced on your own.
- If you take warfarin: don't change the amount of green vegetables abruptly — the drug's effect depends on it. Discuss changes to your diet with your doctor.
What can get in the way
- "No vegetables". Frozen ones or simple sliced vegetables will do — cucumber, tomato, pepper.
- "Eating out or at friends'". Start with a salad or a vegetable starter, bread later.
- "Lunch is a sandwich". Add an egg, cheese or vegetables to it first.
What to expect
Watch how full you feel after meals and how sleepy after lunch, and after a few weeks — your waistline. Weight changes more slowly, so go by how you feel. Log it in VIA-L.
