A growing belly: why it happens to men after 40 and what really works

5 min read

You have to move your belt to the next hole, even though you seem to eat as before. The belly has become noticeable, yet the scales don't show all that much. It's not just "age". Belly fat has its own logic — and its own levers.

One root, many consequences

Fat around the waist isn't the same as fat under the skin. It sits inside, around the organs, and acts as an active tissue. Things that seem separate grow out of it:

Important: fat lowers testosterone more than low testosterone adds fat. That's why "raising the hormone to burn the belly" doesn't work. It works the other way round: the waist shrinks — testosterone goes up.

Measure your waist, not your weight

Scales can't tell muscle from fat and can't see where the fat sits. A person can be thin on the outside with fat on the inside. The most reliable home guide is a waist less than half your height: for example, at 180 cm tall — under 90 cm. A waist of about 102 cm is a signal to pay attention (for an Asian build — about 90 cm). It's a guide, not a verdict.

What works — by strength

Minus 5–10% of body weight. The main lever: it turns everything around at once — sugar, blood pressure, liver, testosterone. How much your waist shrinks matters more than the number on the scales.

Cut out ultra-processed food. Snacks, fast food and sugary drinks push you to overeat on their own. Switching to ordinary food — a Mediterranean style — is the biggest calorie lever.

Strength and aerobic exercise — together. Muscle takes up most of the sugar. A guide: 150 minutes of walking or other cardio a week and 2–3 strength sessions.

Protein and fibre. Protein — 1.2–1.6 g per kilogram of body weight, so that you lose fat, not muscle, as you slim down. Fibre from vegetables, legumes and whole grains — 25–35 g a day.

Eating order and a walk afterwards. Vegetables and protein before carbohydrates, and 10–15 minutes of walking after the meal. This smooths out sugar spikes.

Sleep of 7 hours or more. Short sleep grows belly fat specifically, and appetite. Sleeping an hour longer noticeably reduces the urge to overeat.

Less alcohol and fewer sugary drinks. A "beer belly" is an effect of alcohol in general, not just beer.

About the liver

Fat in the liver is a common, silent companion of a belly. It causes no symptoms, and in two thirds of people ordinary liver tests are normal. A normal ALT doesn't rule it out. A doctor assesses the risk.
