A walk after meals: 10 minutes that change the whole day
After lunch you feel sleepy, a couple of hours later you crave something sweet, and your belly grows even though you eat "as usual". One of the simplest remedies is a short walk right after eating.
Why it works
After a meal, blood sugar rises. When muscles move, they take up sugar — a separate route for absorbing it, on top of the usual one. The peak comes out lower, which means the dip after it is smaller too.
A sedentary day in itself makes it harder for the body to handle sugar. So it helps not only to walk after meals, but also to get up for at least a couple of minutes every 15–20 minutes of sitting.
Walking works especially well together with the step "Vegetables and protein before carbs": the effects add up.
How to do it
- 10–15 minutes of walking after main meals. Best right after eating, not an hour later.
- A normal pace — you can talk. It's not a workout, just movement.
- At your desk — short breaks: stand up, walk around, take the stairs.
Who should be more careful
- Diabetes medication: with a new load, blood sugar can drop more than usual. Keep a quick snack at hand, and stop if you feel weak or shaky.
- Injury, illness, fever — get better first; the step can wait.
What can get in the way
- Desk work. A walk after lunch, calls on the move, stairs instead of the lift.
- Weather. Walking around the house or a shopping centre counts too.
- Evening. Even 10 minutes after dinner is better than going straight to the sofa.
