Protein at every meal: why you need more after 40

3 min read

Coffee in the morning, something on the run during the day, a big dinner in the evening. That's how a great many men eat. And there's almost no protein in this pattern until the evening. After 40 this shows noticeably in muscles, energy and the belly.

Why it works

Muscle has become more "demanding". With age it responds less well to protein, so to keep it you need more protein than before — and spread evenly through the day, not all at dinner.

Protein holds on to muscle during weight loss. When the waistline shrinks, it matters that fat goes, not muscle. Protein and strength training are exactly what take care of that.

Protein keeps you full. Protein-rich food keeps you satisfied for a long time. Ultra-processed snacks, which are low in protein, push you to overeat by themselves.

How to do it

What 30–40 g of protein looks like in practice — roughly:

Protein powder is a handy back-up if you can't get enough from food.

Watch how fullness between meals and strength in workouts change. Log how you feel in VIA-L. Works well paired with strength training.

The strength of this evidence varies: some are large reviews and meta-analyses, some are small single studies. The steps in the article are simple, low-risk self-care measures, not treatment, and they may not suit everyone.
