Where tiredness after 40 comes from and how to get your energy back
You seem to be sleeping, you seem to be eating as usual, yet you have no energy from the moment you wake up. By lunchtime you want to lie down; by evening you don't want anything. The first thought is "I'm low on vitamins". But most often, vitamins are not the issue.
What most often lies behind tiredness
Falling oestrogen really does affect stamina. But tiredness at this age far more often comes from something else — and almost all of it can be checked and put right:
- Sleep. Broken nights add up, and no amount of coffee makes up for them.
- Iron stores. Heavy periods in the transition drain your reserves, and tiredness appears long before a routine blood test changes.
- Thyroid. What sets it apart is feeling cold — in menopause it is usually the opposite, you feel hot.
- Mood. When nothing has brought you joy for more than two weeks, it is not "just tiredness".
So the place to start is not with "energy" supplements but with checking.
Signs that call for a test, not "pushing through"
- Iron: heavy periods, breathlessness or a racing heart on the stairs, hair loss, pallor, craving to chew ice, restless legs in the evening → ferritin and a blood count.
- Thyroid: feeling cold, constipation, a slow pulse, dry skin, puffy eyelids, a hoarse voice → TSH.
- Vitamin B12: numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, "cotton-wool" legs; the risk is higher with metformin, heartburn medication and a vegan diet → a B12 test.
- Breathing during sleep: sleep is unrefreshing despite enough hours, snoring with pauses → see a sleep specialist.
⚠️ A special case: if, after exertion, you feel sharply worse the next day — for hours or a whole day — do not force yourself to do more. See a doctor about this.
What brings energy back
Movement. The strongest energy lever we know of. A combination works best: strength training, short intense bursts with full rest between them, and light cardio. The worst is "moderately hard all the time". The good news: in the first years after menopause the body is especially responsive to training.
Protein in the morning. A protein breakfast within an hour or two of waking. A skipped breakfast and sugar spikes themselves drive up stress hormones — and a slump follows during the day.
A walk after meals. 10–15 minutes after your main meals smooths out the "sugar rollercoaster" and the after-lunch drowsiness.
A sleep anchor. Get up at the same time all seven days and get daylight in the morning. Sometimes the simplest thing is to go to bed half an hour earlier.
What to remove
Alcohol, refined sweets and ultra-processed food, chronic lack of sleep, intense training without recovery — removing these "energy leaks" matters more than adding something.
What about supplements?
Food and movement are stronger than any of them. Iron — only based on a ferritin test, not blindly. Vitamin D is fine even without a test. Magnesium and B vitamins add energy only if you are short of them. Trendy "youth boosters" (NMN, NR and the like) did not improve energy in human studies — we do not recommend them.
When to see a doctor
- Tiredness lasting more than four weeks despite sleep and movement.
- Tiredness together with unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats or swollen lymph nodes.
- Breathlessness, chest pain or palpitations — urgently.
What to try this week
- A source of protein at every meal, starting with breakfast.
- 10–15 minutes of walking after your main meals.
- Two strength sessions of 30–40 minutes on different days.
